Celebrating the labour movement's rich heritage and legacy of struggle for a just society!

May 1st is marked throughout the world as International Workers’ Day, or May Day. A day when the workers of the world take to the streets in every major city around the globe demanding justice, fairness and dignity for all.

In this spirit, the Mayworks Halifax Festival annually celebrates the history and struggle of the working people of Nova Scotia through a series of artistic events including music, theatre, dance, film, visual art and more.

Our 2018 Festival

May 1st is International Workers’ Day. It is a day where we celebrate struggles for fairer working conditions and also take time to reflect on what it is to work. The commemorative tone of many May Day celebrations is often closely linked to stories of factory work and industrial unions - well worth remembering. But work and workers are many things.

This year at Mayworks Halifax, we pay particular attention to the labour done unseen or unrecognized as work: the work of caring for houses and families, the work of trying to find work, the work of trying to change country, the work of caring for our own or someone else’s mental health, the work of trying to fit in, the work of trying not to stand out, the work of surviving violence, the work of dreaming a new world or reclaiming a lost one, the work of lifting voices, the work of finding a way to love yourself, the work of resistance, the work of finding truth, the work of protecting water and land.

We say thank you for all this work. We see you. We celebrate you.
