Shot over several years in a small coastal village on Cape Breton Island, Jacquelyn Mills’ impressionistic documentary depicts the life of her 80 year old grandmother Joan as she struggles to come to terms with the death of her younger sister. Working as a one-woman film crew, Mills intimately captures her grandmother’s deep grief as well as the solace she takes in her connection to the natural world that surrounds her. Time becomes fluid as Joan’s thoughts dance nostalgically between past and present, and a visit from her young niece invites us to contemplate the end of life in contrast with the beginning. At once a sensitive and patient portrait and an ambitious meditation on the meaning of life, In The Waves flows and breathes with a remarkable, delicate beauty.
