Maritime Concert Opera presents Time of Trouble - a new Canadian opera by Elizabeth Raum

Fri, Oct 23, 2015 at 7:30pm

This event has passed.

Join us for the workshop premiere of a new Canadian opera based on a true Nova Scotian story: the arrival of the Sisters of Charity in Halifax and the founding of Mount St Vincent's overlooking the Bedford Basin.

The Sisters of Charity describe a period of struggle in the late 1800s as their "time of trouble" — a struggle for power between the order and their superior, Archbishop Michael Hannan for the right to self determination and the cause of women's education.

Librettist Rex Deverell has been fascinated by this story for years, and decided to bring it to operatic life with composer Elizabeth Raum and the assistance of Maritime Concert Opera.

This sometimes funny, always accessible and moving story will be sung in this first concert presentation by:

Maureen Batt, soprano (Sister, later Mother Francis)
Andrew Pickett, countertenor (Father, later Archbishop Hannan)
Nina Scott-Stoddart, mezzo soprano (Mother Elizabeth)
Robert O'Quinn, baritone (Archbishop Connolly)
Mary Knickle, soprano (Sister DeSales)
Eva Ernst, mezzo soprano (Sister Aloysia)

with the MCO chorus directed by Jane Kristenson
and music director Tara Scott
